For those who haven’t noticed, this year’s You. S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., is playing tough. Totally tough. The wind is gusting, the surfaces is thick, and run away shots are severely reprimanded by fescue so deep it can be difficult to definitely get the club on the ball, not to hit a good shot.
And even when you do cause solid contact, there’s rub-of-the-green circumstances that can make obviously any good well-struck shot go wrong.
During the U. Utes. Open’s third round on Saturday, 2021 Masters champ Hideki Matsuyama learned that tough way, when his procedure from the fescue hit its pin — and ricocheted backward into a greenside fortin. Talk about adding insult to injury! Check out the video formats below.
Here’s how it’s transpired: Matsuyama was especially par for the tournament then five shots off the guided when he approached the 314-yard par-4 5th hole a prior weekend not too long ago.
In an attempt to boost the green on the reachable gap, Matsuyama ended up on the perfectly side of the green, on deep fescue. His is certainly shot — a 23-yard approach — looked proficient at the start. So good, in fact , that it hit the pin. Unfortunately, that rarely goes surely for the pros, and this stroke was no exception.
The ball bounced onerous, and backward, into the top greenside bunker.
“I don’t know if it turns out that’s a bad break and also a good break, ” expert Paul Azinger mused.
It’s hard to inform you on the video where the ball struck the pin number, but you can’t help though think that Matsuyama was complete wrong by the ricochet.
He then failed to find his bunker shot up and then down, and had to settle for just about any bogey.
Matsuyama’s best finish at the Oughout. S. Open was a bind for second in 2017 .
