Jay Monahan didn’t svelte words. The PGA Gira commissioner on Wednesday called the Greg Norman-led LIV Golf Invitational Series a “irrational threat, ” talked about it is not concerned with a true growth of the game and that it’s aiming to buy the sport and take apart the institutions intrinsically committed to its growth.

Monahan spoke to the calcetin at this week’s Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn., and opened his cumbersome press conference with prepared, pointed remarks about the Saudi-backed rival golf league which unfortunately continues to lure players away from the PGA Tour.

In the last couple of weeks the local league, which kicks off its other event next week, has came ashore Patrick Reed, Bryson DeChambeau , Abraham Ancer and, not too long ago, Brooks Koepka .

Rory McIlroy using Brooks Koepka, LIV defectors: ‘They say one thing and then they do another’

Monahan simultaneously met with about 100 people in the Travelers field regarding Tuesday.

“And as I also said to the members yesterday, let me be clear, I tend to be not naive. If this is one arms race and if the sole weapons here are dollar actes, the PGA Tour kaint compete, ” Monahan talked about. “The PGA Tour, a united states institution, can’t compete with another monarchy that is spending immeasureable dollars in attempt to consider the game of golf. We will welcome good, healthy levels of competition. The LIV Saudi actively playing golf league is not that. It’s powerful irrational threat; one not necessarily concerned with the return on investment or sometimes true growth of the game.

“Currently no one thing owns or dominates actively playing golf. Instead, the various entities, can be very relaxing Augusta National or the USGA or the LPGA or the PGA Tour or the PGA towards America work together to meet many of our respective priorities, but with the simplest interests of the game in short at heart, ” he persisted. “But when someone marketing efforts to buy the sport, dismantle some sort of institutions that are intrinsically picked up its growth, and highlight only on a personal priority, your partnership evaporates, and instead today we end up with one person, one organization, using endless amounts of bankroll to direct employees, not necessarily members or partners, regarding their personal goal, which could or may not change tomorrow or the next day. I doubt honestly, that is the vision any of us surely have for the game. Now, I am aware of legacy and purpose look like talking points that don’t hostile much, but when I talk of those concepts, it certainly is not about some sort of intangible édifiant high ground. It is involving our track record as an organization as a sport. ”

His opening remarks resulted in a path forward for this fantastic Tour, as Monahan broke down a future product model starting off the 2022-23 season within included revised exempt wellbeing qualifications, a new mini-series to get a top 50 players contained in the fall and an increase from purse sizes (up up to a $20 million average) when considering eight events.

Monahan said he expressive to Koepka, who withdrew from this week’s Travelers, on the Monday. LIV Golf revealed its press release announcing Koepka as its newest member for the period of Monahan’s Wednesday press conference.

“Listen, every single single player that’s left, Visiting going to say I have terrific admiration and respect for that contributions that they have made to the PGA Tour, ” Monahan said. “And I’m disappointed that Brooks Koepka leaves and has joined the LIV Golf series. ”

Earlier this year, Rory McIlroy said the new league was “dead in the water. ” On Wednesday, Monahan had been asked if he underestimated the impact it would have.

“I wouldn’t suggest that I’ve underestimated this at all, ” he mentioned.
