A maintenance worker at Pebble Beach Golf Links was injured earlier this week when a mower he was riding slid off a cliff alongside the par-5 6th hole.

The man, whose name Pebble Beach did not disclose, was taken by Cal Fire to a nearby hospital, where he reportedly is in good condition, according to statement from Pebble Beach Resorts.

“We are in close contact with our employee and his family,” the statement said. “We are thankful that they report he is doing very well.”

The accident occurred on Monday morning, when golfers were on the course; after the incident, play was briefly suspended. Other maintenance staffers working nearby called in for help, a Pebble Beach spokesperson told GOLF.com.

The 6th hole at Pebble Beach is part of a seaside stretch that is widely regarded as one of the most dramatic in the game. From an elevated tee, the hole plays down to a canted fairway, then over a steep rise, and is bordered on the right by approximately 75-foot high cliffs overlooking Stillwater Cove.

It was on the steep rise where the accident occurred. The maintenance worker was thrown from the mower but it was not immediately clear how far he fell. The mower, too, tumbled down the embankment but did not hit the man, the spokesperson said.

Rain had fallen in the area earlier in the day, but it’s unclear whether wet conditions played a role in the accident, the cause of which has yet to be determined, the spokesperson said.
